Illinois/Chicago Area Plastic Surgery Procedures:
Post-Gastric Bypass/Massive Weight Loss Procedures
Before and After Set #1
Patients who have undergone successful gastric bypass surgery typically lose 100 pounds or more during the first year. This of course leaves patients with lax, excess skin/tissue, typically in their arm, chest, abdominal or thigh areas. Fortunately, plastic surgery can provide dramatic improvements to these problems, although the surgery remains challenging.
Almost all post-GBP patients can benefit from abdominoplasty, which often is performed as previously described, although a vertical "fleur-de-lis" incision may be required to revise the original scar and/or gather up upper abdominal tissue redundancy. In extreme cases, a "belt lipectomy" may be performed, with incisions encircling the trunk.
The breast area is usually addressed by way of an aggressive mastopexy, with or without implants, to restore breast contour/fullness. This is not particularly difficult in most patients, as we have a large experience with breast reduction patients, many of whom have significant skin excess issues as well.
Although the gastric bypass procedure itself is often covered by insurance, a majority of these secondary procedures are not. These fees are usually significantly discounted, however, since most of these patients are faced with multiple issues/surgeries, and have already been through a lot as it is . . .
