Liposuction, or "suction-assisted lipectomy", is probably the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery in America, in both men and women. This is designed to eliminate or recontour deposits of fatty tissue that just don't respond to a reasonable course of diet and/or exercise. The best candidates for this procedure have relatively isolated problem areas - often the abdomen, flanks, hip rolls, and inner/outer thighs - and good quality overlying skin.

Liposuction is usually performed under light general anesthesia, with the use of "tumescent fluid" infiltrated into the areas to be treated, which both helps anesthetize the area, as well as limit bleeding. The Health South Surgical Center of Hawthorne offers ultrasound-assisted liposuction, which theoretically improves skin retraction/adherence post-operatively. This is greatly helped by the wearing of specialized compression garments for several weeks. Unless large amounts of fat are to be removed (over 4 liters), liposuction is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.
