Illinois/Chicago Area Plastic Surgery Procedures:
Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia)
Most males undergo subtle breast changes as they pass through puberty. Occasionally this is characterized by a temporary lumpiness behind the nipple. In certain males, however, these changes persist or the chest takes on an undesireable "feminized" appearance, known as "gynecomastia", whether this be due to nipple enlargement, subareolar masses, general fattiness or excessive skin.
In cases where hormonal abnormalities (usually due to relative estrogen excess) or exogenous agents (medications, excessive marijuana use) have been ruled out as the source for this gynecomastia, plastic surgery techniques can be applied to create a more masculinized appearance of the chest. If there truly is a firm fullness or mass behind the nipple, this may be eligible for insurance coverage to perform a formal biopsy to rule out a malignant process (as men can get breast cancer too). Otherwise, procedures for gynecomastia are usually considered cosmetic, ranging from liposuction to direct skin/fat excision as necessary.

Case #1: 66 year-old Chicago-area man with "gynecomastia", or a feminized chest appearance. Underwent chest recontouring via direct excision of skin and underlying fibrofatty tissue; approximately 3 months post-op.

Case #2: 22 year-old Chicago-area man with milder form of "gynecomastia", characterized by fibrofatty tissue excess only. Underwent chest recontouring via ultrasound-assisted liposuction of chest (200-300cc each side); approximately 3 months post-op.
